They say you can only make an (good) impression once … I believe this is true and … that preparation is key! So don’t have a bad hair day

I am very fortunate that I can say that I love what I do and that I do what I love! I am the Managing Director of Bitfactory USA. Bitfactory does everything that has to do with Internet | Graphic Design | Multi Media. We love to design and make things beautiful. Again … you can only make an impression once.

I grew up in the Dutch inland shipping industry and have some sea time under my belt. I am passionate about international trade and have the water running through my veins. When I was 25, I decided to do a Global MBA. I studied a semester in the UK and in the US. The final stage was writing a dissertation. I ended up working for Transoceanic Cable Ship Company, a business unit of the big conglomerate Tyco International. Man … did I feel like a fish in the water!

My goal was to write a killer dissertation. And … I did! But before I landed this great gig I had to jump through some hoops meaning I had to write a chrystal clear resume (and introduction) to get my foot in the door. In January this year we launched MaritimeJobSearch.com: a global employment website for the Shipping | Transportation | Engineering industry. This is a lot of fun and as you see, you always go back to your roots.

Ultimate goal is to make MaritimeJobSearch.com the niche job board of choice for many maritime and marine industry and market leaders. This means we have a lot of resumes in our database and frequently I take a peak in order the maintain a certain quality level. You really have to study and invest time in writing a killer resume. Unfortunately, not everybody takes this task seriously. Please see below some important key ingredients of a good resume:

State your objective: this shows that you know who you are, what you can, and what you want!

One pager: try to keep your resume on one page … maximum two pages;

Communicate clearly: don’t try to impress with corporate mambo jambo but write clear and effective. Less is more.

Schedule a phone screening around your time table so you are comfortable;

Discuss money on the second ‘date’ because you don’t want to waste each others time;

Network, network, network (these points are in random order b.t.w.);

Stand out and mail your resume and cover letter. There are a lot of spam filters nowadays;

Don’t call us … we call you! Take initiative, pick up the phone and market yourself!

Only start filling in all kind of forms ‘when it is love at first sight’. References can be given when there is interest from both sites;

Don’t post your resume on every job board but utilize your network!

What do you believe are key ingredients in a killer resume?

Good news for IHC Merwede! IHC needs to expand their manpower pool by hundreds of men and women. Today IHC announced that they received orders for 300 million euro and need extra manpower to fulfill these orders.

Currently, IHC employs around 2,200 people at all levels. IHC is looking particularly (like anybody else in the industry) for technical people but need also sales and administrative people.

IHC received four orders for dredging ships from Angola and South Africa. Additionally, IHC received orders to built oil drilling ships.

IHC was splitt off in 2005 from platform builder SBM Offshore and booked a profit of 64.6 million and had sales of 774 million euro. IHC profits from the growing demand for oil and gas and shipping transportation and its infrastructure.

MaritimeJobSearch.com is looking forward to partner with IHC in order to find qualified and skilled manpower.

The ultimate goal of ThinkMaritime.com and MaritimeJobSearch.com ultimate goal is to promote the maritime industry and to bring key stakeholders closer together via diverse collaborative projects.

Another organization that has the same noble goals is the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU).

IAMU was founded by seven universities representing the five continents of the world (Representative Universities) in November, 1999, with a shared recognition of significance of maritime education and training in the rapid globalization of the international shipping arena. Since then, IAMU has significantly expanded its membership, and now boasts 50 institutions of the world’s maritime education and training universities/faculties, and The Nippon Foundation as its members, totaling 51 altogether.

Representative Universities at the time of foundation in 1999:

Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime Transport (Representing Africa);

Australian Maritime College (Oceania);

Cardiff University (Western Europe) [now replaced by Polytechnical University of Catalonia, Faculty of Nautical studies, Barcelona);

Istanbul Technical University, Maritime Faculty (Mediterranean, Black Sea, ex Central and Eastern Europe);

Kobe University of Mercantile Marine (Asia) [now transformed to Kobe University, Faculty of Maritime Sciences)

Maine Maritime Academy (Americas including the Caribbean’s);

World Maritime University (General representation).

All IAMU members recognize the significance of maritime education and training and note that:

The shipping industry is a service industry, in which human resources are the critical element;

It is only feasible to secure, and to preserve highly qualified human resources in the maritime industries through effective education and training; and

Effective education and training in the maritime sector derives from:

scientific and academic rigor;

development of a clear link between practical skills and management techniques; and

a focus on quality.

Based on these shared understanding, IAMU members cooperate each other and aim to attain the following goals:

To develop a comprehensive Maritime Education System for following generations;

To establish and effective Maritime Safety Management System for the international maritime community;

Prepare develop standardized Undergraduate Curricula and an International Certification System for Competency.

To attain above mentioned goals, IAMU implements such activities as:

To seek participation of as many qualified maritime universities/faculties as possible;

To maintain regular and ongoing communication and exchange among members;

To pursue measurable and worthwhile outcomes on specific subjects primarily through Working Groups;

To yield tangible results through Project System which invites rank and file IAMU members to present new project proposals;

To hold a General Assembly annually;

To publish through Editorial Board academic periodicals, news and summaries of activities, and research papers; and

To build international network of students of IAMU member institutions through IAMUS (Students) activities;

The next gathering of the IAMU is October 19-22, 2008. Planning is well underway for the 9th Annual General Assembly of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), with the theme Common Seas, Common Shores. Additional program elements will take place at Cal Maritime’s campus here in Vallejo, California.

ThinkMaritime.com will be there … are you?
