Today, Brunswick announced that it will cut 1,400 more jobs. The company is shutting down four more plants. The company is facing a falling demand for boats because of the poor economy. This means that Brunswick has cut more than a third of its marine work force since the beginning of 2008.

The overall fiberglass boat industry fell about 40 percent and the sales of aluminum boats decreased about 21 percent this summer. Brunswick is closing plants permanently in Pipestone, Roseburg, and Arlington and is ‘mothballing’ U.S. Marine boatyard at Navassa with the hope to re-open at the end of the year, if the economy gets better. Since 2006, Brunswick has closed more than 40% of its boat plants!

The cuts will save about $300 million by the end of 2009. This may prevent Brunswick from making a profit in 2008.
